A ship pulled into port last night. This, then, means that the husband is called to work this morning, and our Sunday is tilted and everything tumbles out of order.
A kiss on the cheek to bid me good-bye, I roll over and decide to take in a few more moments of blessed slumber, church now off the day's agenda.
Showers optional, messy-haired and sluggish-brained, we piece together the final scrambled pieces of the weeks-long puzzle, discovering thirteen gaping holes. Coffee cups, bracelet-making tools, we stare at the puzzle trying to decipher what the missing parts are meant to be, discovering that like life, when we focus on those small missing parts, we miss the bigger picture; but when we step back, the bigger picture is still beautiful, it still works, even if a small flower or brick is not there.
Tangled hair, mirroring my own, my big girl joins me in the kitchen with her arms adorned with proudly-made bracelets and we set out to make ingredients-free cookies that might still be palatable.
We are not the pinterest perfect. We are messy and real with sticky tables and ugly countertops, transformers and kitchen appliances cluttering our minimal space. But we are determined to see beauty. Real, messy, chaotic beauty in our world.
Beauty which takes patience and time, but isn't the wait part of the beauty of it all?
And we learn, once again, that what is on the outside does not always reflect what is on the inside of things. Part of the beauty is discovering what lies beneath the outer shell, and trusting that there is goodness in everything if we give it a chance.
"I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink and find satisfaction in all their toil -- this is the gift of God." Ecclesiastes 3:10-13
